Into His Marvelous Light on church websites... Is it legal?
Since Into His Marvelous Light caught on in the late 80's, we've experienced a wave of churches adding it to their websites. Most have added it without regard for copyright infringement when posting it on line without permission of the publisher, which is illegal use of copyrighted material. We have allowed this to continue for all the right reasons, but have cringed when we see some churches alter the images, the cover, some of the text, and even completely disregard the format of the study. Almost all have posted it without contacting us or without credits.
You may wonder why we have allowed this to run unabated. As you can imagine, it's not been an easy decision and watching the creations some have used has caused me a lot of heartburn. I'm torn between wanting to reach the lost (the original and current pure intent) and protecting what is lawfully ours. Hopefully, it's obvious tha the former purpose has outweighed the latter intent.
The publishers and authors have never taken salary from the sales of the study, rather plowed the money into events, more printing of IHML, the website and promotions, so money isn't the objective here. At the same time that we've wanted to reach the lost, we've wanted to uphold the integrity of the study, both in it's aesthetics and in context with the original format development which was tested and proven successful prior to launch.
So what to do?! We have come to the conclusion that we need to provide churches with the right product to post on their sites. And in return for allowing the posting of the study, all we'll ask is that there be a link to the IHML website for ordering studies, commenting, and reading teaching resources. We'll also require a copyright symbol and the proper legal language is added (in a single line below the study). I have engaged the designers to get the web-enabled version of IHML ready for posting in February. We intend to have it up and running no later than the 15th. You'll be able to get onto www.intohismarvelouslight.com and download it once you tell us a little bit about your church and how you plan to use it. It will be illegal to download it for printing. This is only a website product and will be restricted as such.
After this is ready for placement, we'll be contacting all sites currently posting a version of IHML to remove the current version and replace it with the official version. This will be free. Our goal is as yours... to win souls. May God bless you. I'm open to your input and happy to listen to any thoughts or ideas you may want to offer.
Sincerely,
Galen Walters

I am so excited to see this tool made available. Last year I had an idea to put an ad in the paper inviting our community to join in on an online Bible Study at a specific time from the comfort of their own home. Then at the end somehow give out contact information should they have questions or need more information. This IHML interactive online study gets us one step closer to reaching this outreach goal. When this comes to fruition, I will pass along the exciting news. Just think how many people will go through this on their own that will not commit to a one on one study!
